Children at a very early age become adept at tuning to the channel of their (and not their parent's) choice. Watching a favorite cartoon becomes more important than the attempted language engineering of the parent. This occasionally works to the advantage of bilingualism. Watching Mickey Mouse or Bugs Bunny is important, watching it in German, French, Japanese or English can become relatively unimportant to the child. I have spotted my own children watching German language television particularly sports and children's programs even though they have not been taught that language.

If neighbors believe that local assimilation demands monolingualism in their language, the price of friendship needs weighing against the wealth gained from language preservation. < previous page page_19 next page > < previous page page_20 next page > Page 20 One issue raised by this question is whether children should be kept away from neighbors so that they do not develop superior performance in one language rather than another. The answer is that one language does not usually develop at the cost of another.

One danger is where language uniformity exists in the home that parallels the same language uniformity in the community. For example, in-migrant parents decide to lose their heritage language and speak the language of the host country instead. In such cases, the chance of bilingualism will be lost and monolingualism may result. Another danger in this 'in-migrant' situation is that the parent speaks an incorrect or pidgin form of the majority language to the child. If the parent learning the second language is a poor language model, the child may be placed at a disadvantage.
