One day in August of 1862, when she saw her name on a yellow playbill announcing coming attractions, she stood transfixed, reading the words over and over: “Iphigénie by Racine. ” It was hard to believe she was really going to appear in the greatest theater in France in the leading role of a play by the greatest French writer of tragedies. Instead of the triumph Bernhardt had dreamed of, the debut was a disappointment thanks to an overwhelming case of stage fright. Standing in the wings waiting to go on, she was paralyzed with fear.

The Virgin Mary was her ideal, and Mother Sainte-Sophie her earthly model. She felt mystic yearnings and imagined herself dying at the foot of the altar lying under a black cloak emblazoned with a glowing white cross. She felt happy thinking of the horrified reactions of the nuns and students to such a scene. When Sarah was 13, it was announced that the archbishop of Paris was coming to visit the convent. The buildings and the grounds were scoured and polished from top to bottom. Speeches and music were prepared, and a play was written in his honor.

Five men caught the ropes as they came to ground near a small railroad station. The adventure had ended. After a tedious wait, Bernhardt caught a train for Paris, arriving at her destination in the middle of the night. The next day Perrin called Bernhardt into his office and reprimanded her. By leaving Paris without special permission, he informed her, she had broken one of the strict rules of the Comédie Française. Furthermore, Perrin raged, her antics disgraced France’s national theater. He demanded that she pay a fine of 1,000 francs for the infraction, but Bernhardt laughed in his face.
